Historical background of Ministry of Sport in
brief
The sports activities were implemented
centralising in Yangon with Burma Athletic Association and in Mandalay
with Upper Burma Athletic Association . But all the activities were
led by the British. Myanmar weightlifter U Zaw Weik and his coach U
Shein participated as the members of the Indiansports contingent in
the (11th) Olympic Games which was held in Berlin , Germany in 1936.
Burma Olympic Association was established on 26th November,1946.The
patrons were General Aung San and that time governor Sir Hubert Rance.
The president elected was Sir M.A. Maung Gyi and the vice president
was U Razat . On 9th July,1947, Burma Olympic Association was officially
affiliated to the International Olympic Committee. In 1948, 14th Olympic
Games which was held in London, England, Myanamr took part as a Nation
for the very first time in its History.
National Fitness Council was established on 9th October,1950.The honourable
Health Mininster was officiated as the chairman of NFC and there were
(15) members.The main objectives of NFC was “ To look after the
health of the entire nation and especially of the fitness of the Youth
”. District Councils were formed and district sports organisers
were appointed and sports activities were implemented all over the country
.In 1952, Inter States and Division Football Tournament was held for
the first time. As the International Sports Competitions , Myanmar had
hosted South East Asian Peninsular Boxing Championship in 1957 and 2nd
South East Asian Peninsular Games in 1961.
UBSPEC was established on 27th May, 1964 .The Health Minister was designated
as the Chairman and the Director General of the office of Sports and
Physical Education Committee as the secretary .In the various States
and Divisions , States , Divisions , Districts and Townships Sports
and Physical Education Committees were formed and Sports Organisers
were appointed in order to implement the sports activities throughout
the nation.
In 1972 , Sports and Physical Education Department (SPED) was established
under the Ministry of Health . Since 1st July , 1993, SPED was transferred
from the Ministry of Health to the Prime Minister’s Office.
